The manufacturing process of high-grade TMT bars can be broadly categorized into the following levels: 

Mining

The iron ore used for the SML TMT bars are mined locally and transported to the manufacturing plants. SML sources almost all of its iron ore from the mines in Keonjhar district’s Khandbandh. The Loidapada manufacturing unit of SML mines around 1.5Tns of iron ore per annum, which is used to manufacture approximately 1000 TPD sponge iron, 100 TPD pig iron, 400 TPD TMT rebars, 875 TPD steel billets, and 2000 TPD iron pellets. 

Production 

  • Processing iron ore to metal

Once the iron ore has been mined, it is processed at SML’s 28 MW Captive Power Plant. The power required by the plant is collectively generated by the Waste Heat Recovery System, which utilizes the waste gases from the kiln. The grid backups and DGs ensure an uninterrupted supply of power to the processing and manufacturing units. All the stages of production are supervised to make the plant eco-friendly. Once processed to steel, the metal is shaped before it is thermo-mechanically treated. 

  • Thermo-Mechanical Treatment

Thermo-mechanical treatment is an important step in ensuring the quality of the TMT bars. One of the steps in this process is quenching, which is typically done by passing the processed iron billets through a water spray system known as Thermax. This treatment effectively cools down the iron billets, causing them to harden and improve in terms of ductility. SML uses the proprietary Thermax Quenching System Technology from Germany since 2006. 

Quality Assurance

Quality assurance is one of the most vital steps in the production of SML TMT bars. Using the latest testing equipment, the TMT bars are subjected to physical tests carried out on an hourly basis. Chemical tests are also carried out during the manufacturing process alongside physical tests. Before dispatch, the TMT bars undergo a final quality assurance as per BIS standards. Quality assurance ensures the desirable quality of TMT bars before they are delivered to consumers.
